What Are Dental Implant-Supported Restorations?

Older woman smilingDental implants are titanium posts that are surgically implanted in the jaw bone, and serve a similar function to a tooth root. Once an implant has healed, it can be fitted with an abutment piece, which will offer secure support for a range of functional restorations. Implants also have the added benefit of preventing atrophy of the jaw, which occurs after a tooth has been missing for an extended period of time.

Restorations refer to a range of dental prostheses used to replace missing teeth, or strengthen a weakened tooth. A dental crown is designed to restore a single tooth. Traditional crowns are tooth-shaped caps that fit over a tooth that has been weakened by trauma or decay. Alternatively, with implant-retained crowns, patients can fill the gap in their a smile where a tooth has been lost, or is so weakened or unhealthy it must be extracted.

Bridges, also known as partial dentures, are prosthetic teeth that replace a few consecutive missing teeth in a row. Traditional bridges are placed by altering the teeth adjacent to the gap to accommodate crowns, which serve as the anchor for the bridge. Implant-retained bridges benefit from added stability, and do not require the surrounding, healthy teeth to be altered.

Dentures may be recommended for patients who have lost an entire arch of teeth, and can replace all of the teeth on the bottom or top of the mouth, or both. Traditional dentures are held in place with a mild adhesive. However, using this method, teeth can slip out of place while talking or eating. With implants, denture patients will not have to worry about their dentures slipping out of place while they eat, speak or laugh.
